WHAT MAKES WILDER LANGUAGE AND LEARNING DIFFERENT?
There are many options for literacy support in Boulder, Colorado. At Wilder Language and Learning, intervention is truly custom designed. We use materials and methodology from numerous evidenced based programs including Lindamood-Bell, Orton-Gillingham, Language!, Wilson Reading Systems, LETRS and many more! We do not subscribe to one program. This allows us the flexibility to develop a scope and sequence of instruction that best meets the client’s needs. It also allows us to quickly meet clients’ needs, as we can be flexible in the child’s learning because we do not have to follow the established curriculum of one program.
WHAT IS SPEECH THERAPY ANYWAYS?
Most think of speech therapy as simply treating sound production errors (articulation). In reality, speech therapy includes intervention that treats all elements of communication including language, literacy, and learning development. WHY SHOULD I WORK WITH A SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST?
Speech-language pathologists are master level, licensed medical professionals that have a depth and breath of clinical skills that are designed to remediate language processing, including reading and writing. At Wilder Language and Learning, services are alway being provided by speech language pathologist. Having a highly trained clinician exclusively delivering services provides the client with more expertise and assures clinician accountability during intervention.
WHY A BLOCK SYSTEM?
There are several reasons why WLL chose to use a block system service delivery model instead of a traditional service delivery model. Having a fixed amount of time to accomplish goals tends to increase the focus and commitment for clients and families, while also increasing the accountability for therapists. This results in a greater response to intervention in a shorter amount of time. A block system also supports intentional, mandatory and frequent data review to ensure that treatment plans are effective. If the treatment plan is not optimal, the block system allows for immediate recognition that the treatment direction must be altered.
HOW MANY SESSIONS PER WEEK?
While traditional therapy thinks of sessions per week, a block system conceptualizes sessions per block. Depending upon a client’s response speed, level of performance, individual needs and family schedule, the allotted number of sessions is scheduled flexibly throughout the six weeks.
A block system allows for frequent adjustments to the frequency and duration of treatment sessions. Learning is fluid. Some days one will learn better than other days. One’s learning rate naturally experiences plateaus and accelerated peaks. Block systems allow for the flexibility to capitalize on these plateaus and valleys in learning, which ultimately increases the rate of learning
HOW LONG ARE SESSIONS?
At WLL we understand that your greatest resources is time. For today’s busy family, it is difficult to make the sacrifice of time to meet the needs of therapy. Knowing how valuable your time is, we are committed to making the greatest impact in the shortest amount of time. For this reason, sessions are scheduled with the goal for a targeted amount of accurate responses. This typically takes 45 mins, however; the goal of each individual session is number of accurate trials, not minutes on the clock.
